Your Deer hunting Rifle - Pick the Perfect Firearm
When you go hunting, there’s nothing more important than picking the right deer hunting rifle
. Selecting a firearm which has the ballistics, design, action, sighting and size to accommodate your hunting area and personal capability is the basis of achieving your goal once your prey is hunted and located. Your ultimate success depends upon having a deer hunting rifle that fits all these criteria.
Where Will You Be Hunting?
There are two main kinds of deer hunting environments, deep woods or dense brush country and open range country. You may be hunting in an area that has a mixture of both these environment types. Each environment commands its own unique shooting style and rifle traits.
Deep Woods/Dense Brush Deer Hunting Rifles
Good woods and brush deer hunting rifles should excel in short to medium range shooting. The average shooting distance in this type of environment is from twenty-five to two hundred yards. You will be best served if your deep woods deer hunting rifle is relatively light, less than nine pounds including scope, and short, with a barrel length of less than twenty-two inches. Portability is important when moving in dense brush. Get a deer hunting rifle that offers fast reload - automatics or lever action would be best; you might have to do a quick follow shot when you’re deer hunting in rough terrain. You need to penetrate the brush, so get a bullet with a heavy cartridge - nothing less than 120 grain and .270 caliber. Calibers/cartridges that travel at over 2200 feet per second are not recommended to minimize bullet deflection by the brush. Scopes of four power or variable scopes which go down to 3X are recommended, and if your hunting terrain only permits shots of fifty yards or less then you might prefer open sights. Practice at the rifle range to determine if you can become comfortable with open site shooting.
Deer Hunting Rifles for the Open Range
Deer hunting rifles which are good performers in open areas are those designed for longer range shooting, up to three hundred yards or farther. Rifle portability is not as important as accuracy and velocity in long shot situations and the rifles will be heavier and with longer barrel lengths than deep woods rifles. Flat shooting high velocity rifle calibers and cartridges are required here. Calibers in the 6MM (.243) caliber range or higher will be OK, and bullets from 100 grain and heavier will work. Generally, the larger the caliber is, the heavier the bullet will need to be for the best ballistic accuracy. Scopes with a 6 X 9 variable power are what most shooters will need at the very least.
Personal Preferences
When you start looking for the best deer hunting rifle for you, you want to make sure that you keep the above considerations in mind. Make sure that you are comfortable with the way that you’re shooting, and how you shoot when using a high caliber or magnum caliber rifle. Do you really want to lug ten or twelve pounds of long rifle with you around your deer hunting terrain?
You can probably go to your local hunting rifle dealer and try out a variety of different deer hunting rifles, and get a better feel for what you want and what “fits” you.. Whenever you can ask a successful hunters what type of rifle they use and why. Ask friends to permit you to hold and handle their rifles and find out what you like and dislike about it.
